Navigation for the Visually Impaired

ABSTRACT

I have built a navigation system for the visually impaired. This system is a wearable computer, which is connected to a Kinect sensor, a GPS and a tactile display. GPS component helps the system to locate the current position so that the computer can compute the path for the user by using map services such as Google Map. The Kinect sensor keeps collecting environment images with depth and send to the computer. The system figures out not only the shortest but also the safest way for the blind by using vibration motors. Also, the system alerts the user when it detects an obstacle in front of the user. The system involves a tactile display so that the user can read the message by vibration from the system.
